Cooking Measurement Converter · Cups, Spoons and Pinches to Grams

A cup is a measure of space, not of weight, so "1 cup" of flour, sugar and honey weigh three different amounts. This converter changes a US kitchen measure into grams for the ingredient you are actually using: a tablespoon of sugar, a pinch of salt, a stick of butter, a cup of brown sugar or a teaspoon of baking powder.

Pick the ingredient, type the amount, add a fraction if you need one (such as 1/2 or 3/4) and choose the measure. Besides the common teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart and gallon, it understands the informal measures found in older recipes: smidgen, pinch, dash, jigger, gill, coffee cup and stick of butter. It also works backwards: enter grams, ounces or pounds and see the cups, tablespoons and teaspoons.
You get the weight in grams, ounces and pounds, the volume in cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces and milliliters, and the grams per cup, tablespoon and teaspoon of the ingredient so you can scale a recipe by hand. Weights are typical values: how tightly flour is packed, the brand of salt and the humidity change them by a few percent. For baking, weighing on a kitchen scale is always more accurate than measuring by volume.

Calculation Formula

Standard Method
Volume in teaspoons = Amount × Teaspoons per measure
Teaspoons per measure: pinch 1/16, dash 1/8, smidgen 1/32, tablespoon 3, fluid ounce 6, jigger 9, stick of butter 24, cup 48, pint 96, quart 192, gallon 768
Grams per teaspoon = Grams per cup ÷ 48
Grams = Volume in teaspoons × Grams per teaspoon
Milliliters = Teaspoons × 4.92892
Ounces (weight) = Grams ÷ 28.3495
Pounds = Grams ÷ 453.592
From weight: Teaspoons = Grams ÷ Grams per teaspoon
Volumes use the US customary definitions in NIST Handbook 44 (1 cup = 236.588 mL). The grams per cup of each ingredient come from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart for dry ingredients and from USDA FoodData Central household measures for liquids and fats. Pinch, dash and smidgen are informal measures, so their sizes are the usual kitchen-chart values and not an exact standard.
Benchmark Example:
One tablespoon of granulated sugar, with 198 grams per cup:
• Teaspoons: 1 tablespoon × 3 = 3 teaspoons
• Grams per teaspoon: 198 ÷ 48 = 4.125 g
• Grams: 3 × 4.125 = 12.4 g (0.44 oz)
Other common conversions:
• 1 cup all-purpose flour (120 g per cup): 120 g
• 1/2 cup packed brown sugar (213 g per cup): 106.5 g
• 1 stick of butter (1/2 cup, 227 g per cup): 113.5 g
• 1 teaspoon table salt (288 g per cup): 6 g
• 1 pinch of table salt (1/16 teaspoon): 0.38 g
• 1 teaspoon baking powder: 4 g

Official Legal Reference
NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C — General Tables of Units of Measurement

Defines the US customary liquid measures used here: 1 teaspoon = 4.92892 mL, 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons, 1 fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons and 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces = 236.588 mL.

21 CFR § 101.9(b)(5) — Nutrition Labeling of Food, Household Measures

Sets the rounded household measures used on US nutrition labels (1 teaspoon = 5 mL, 1 tablespoon = 15 mL, 1 cup = 240 mL), which is why a label serving can differ slightly from the exact customary cup.
